Helmut Pribyl is the founder and CEO of K&P Handelsgesellschaft. He guides the company’s overall direction, oversees daily operations and manages its IT systems. A key part of his role is running Tabakguru, the company’s online shop. K&P Handelsgesellschaft specializes in premium tobacco products and is known for its reliable service, fast delivery, and high-quality products. Alongside physical stores and sales through marketplaces, Tabakguru attracts around 260,000 visitors each month, making it a vital part of the business. Challenge


Repeat purchases common in the tobacco and indulgence goods industry. Many customers know exactly what they want and expect a quick, seamless search for their preferred products or brands. On the other hand, new customers often seek inspiration and need an easy way to explore a wide product range. Tabakguru’s previous search system struggled to meet these needs.

The old solution lacked the flexibility to customize or prioritize product sorting. This made it challenging to highlight popular products or move out-of-stock items out of focus. Even well-known search tools used before fell short. “With other solutions, we achieved about 80% of the desired result quality — but the final 20% makes all the difference for our customers,” explains Helmut.

To meet these high standards and create a better shopping experience, Tabakguru needed a more advanced solution that could not only handle their growing online traffic but also improve it.

Following a detailed evaluation and a recommendation from their eCommerce partner amiconsult, Tabakguru selected FactFinder as their product discovery solution. “FactFinder is known as a high-end product — it’s like the Ferrari of search engines,” says Helmut.

Tabakguru, amiconsult and FactFinder worked together to set clear milestones for the integration project. The first step was launching the FactFinder Minimum Viable Product (MVP), which included intelligent, controllable search, dynamic filters and auto-suggest. After this initial phase, the team refined the analytics and implemented advanced AI tools, including Atlas AI and the Predictive Basket.

Atlas AI enhances search results and recommendations by analyzing individual preferences and real-time shopping behavior, delivering more relevant results. The Predictive Basket simplifies reordering for repeat customers by automatically creating personalized and up-to-date product lists.

For Tabakguru, controlling search result rankings was a top priority. “Other solutions lacked this flexibility,” says Helmut. “You can program it yourself, but it never turns out quite as you’d like.” With FactFinder’s ranking rules, Tabakguru can easily tailor search results to balance business goals such as promoting higher-margin products or specific brands, and customer preferences, like ratings or availability. “For example, sold-out products automatically appear at the bottom, so our customers always see what’s available to buy first,” Helmut explains.

To address these, Tabakguru uses Atlas AI, a personalization solution tailored to their needs. Trained on Tabakguru’s product data, Atlas AI builds a “neural map” of the assortment, enabling FactFinder to learn quickly from shopper interactions and deliver highly relevant product results.
Atlas AI works on three levels:
1. General relevance: It automatically learns from all user interactions to improve search results and recommendations, minimizing the need for manual adjustments.
2. Real-time relevance: During a session, results adapt to the shopper’s immediate intent. For example, if a customer searches for “Elfbar,” the AI prioritizes Elfbar battery systems over unrelated refill products.
3. Preference-based relevance: Atlas AI identifies individual preferences based on past purchases and interactions, offering personalized results that reflect the customer’s unique shopping habits.

The Predictive Basket is an AI-powered tool that anticipates customer needs while increasing average order value. From as early as the second visit, the AI accurately predicts which products a customer is most likely to reorder. This personalized list is displayed on the frontend, enabling customers to refill their cart with a single click — no need to search or worry about forgetting essential items. This feature solidifies Tabakguru’s reputation as the go-to shop for customers with regular purchasing habits. The recommendations are dynamic, adapting to changes in buying behavior to account for new preferences or spontaneous needs. For loyal customers, the Predictive Basket offers a convenient and time-saving service. For Tabakguru’s eCommerce team, it significantly enhances the shop’s functionality. Data from other retailers highlights its impact: Predictive Basket users typically add 2.3 more items to their cart on average.

What's next


Customer behavior in the tobacco and indulgence goods industry is shifting. More shoppers are moving online, though the industry’s online revenue share remains relatively small. “It’s growing,” says Helmut. “Online shopping is becoming more popular, and our goal is to capture more market share. Currently, we’re growing by 15 to 20 percent.”
